In a recent hearing before the Senate appropriations committee, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the ongoing conflict with Iran has so far incurred costs of $37.5 billion. This revelation comes as Hegseth, alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, requests a substantial $1.5 trillion defense budget, which includes earmarking $70 billion specifically for military actions in Iran.

Context of the Financial Estimates

This latest estimate has drawn attention, particularly when juxtaposed against forecasts from economic analysts. Moody’s Analytics, for instance, has projected that the domestic economic implications of the war could reach as high as $150 billion, factoring in variables such as increased energy prices for consumers.

Hegseth defended his department's figure during a questioning from Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, stating, "The estimate we have as of today is $37.5 billion," without detailing specific operational costs included in the total. Notably, this amount reflects an increase of approximately $8 billion from previous estimates provided by the Trump administration, which had cited costs around $29 billion earlier this year.

"So I’ll be blunt," Murray stated. "The truth is, your request does not make a lot of sense."
