Trump Announces Three-Day Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine
President Trump announces a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine starting Saturday, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
Trump Calls for Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, effective from Saturday, coinciding with the commemorations of Russia's victory in World War II. The ceasefire marks a significant effort to halt hostilities that have persisted since the conflict began in February 2022.
Details of the Ceasefire
According to Trump, the ceasefire will include a complete cessation of military activities and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. The initiative was revealed following a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 29, aimed at establishing this temporary truce.
Trump expressed hope that this ceasefire could be the beginning of the end for the lengthy and violent conflict, stating, "We hope this marks the start of a conclusion to a very long, bloody, and tough war." He also indicated that progress was being made in negotiations to resolve the situation.
Previous Ceasefires and Current Proposals
In the past year, Putin announced a similar ceasefire that lasted three days but was not agreed upon with Kyiv. The current truce is part of a broader context, as Russia recognizes the significance of the dates coinciding with the War Victory celebrations.
Additionally, Ukraine has proposed an open-ended ceasefire starting midnight Tuesday, urging Russia to reciprocate with a similar commitment. Ukrainian officials are hopeful that this proposal, along with the recent ceasefire announcement, will pave the way for renewed negotiations.
Diplomatic Efforts and Stalled Talks
The announcement comes amidst stalled peace talks that have faced significant challenges in recent months. Ukrainian chief negotiator Rustem Umerov arrived in Miami for a series of discussions with U.S. representatives, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue, especially in light of complications surrounding the eastern Donetsk region.
Both sides have accused each other of violating previously declared ceasefires, further complicating the prospect of long-term peace. While Russia demands that Ukraine withdraw its forces from areas it has struggled to control, Ukraine remains steadfast in not ceding any of its territory.
As the geopolitical situation evolves, the international community watches closely to see if this ceasefire can establish a pathway towards a sustainable peace between Russia and Ukraine.
