Thousands Join Palestine Marathon in Solidarity Amid Ongoing Conflict

A Testament to Resilience

The tenth Palestine International Marathon kicked off on Friday in Bethlehem, attracting over 13,000 participants, including 2,523 runners from Gaza. This event came as a powerful demonstration of resilience and solidarity amid the devastating backdrop of Israel's ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Unity in Adversity

Organized in coordination with a concurrent 5km race in Gaza, the marathon aimed to unite Palestinians on both sides of the Israeli separation wall. The event commenced at 6 a.m. local time at the Church of the Nativity, a historic site known as the birthplace of Jesus. Marathon coordinator Itidal Abdul Ghani emphasized that this year's race symbolized "the unity of the homeland," showcasing participants from diverse backgrounds.

The marathon featured various categories, including a full marathon, a 21km half marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km family run, ensuring inclusivity for professional athletes, amateurs, and families alike. Among the diverse participants were approximately 1,000 international runners from 75 different countries. Additionally, a virtual marathon was held from April 17 to 21, drawing over 5,000 participants from 88 nations, further amplifying the event's global reach.

This year's race unfolded amidst a surge in violence in both Gaza and the West Bank. Since the onset of Israel's military operations in Gaza, Palestinian officials report over 1,155 deaths and nearly 11,750 injuries in the West Bank, alongside significant casualties in Gaza, with local authorities estimating more than 72,000 deaths and 172,000 injuries. The marathon served as a poignant reminder of the human toll caused by the conflict, with many participants clutching Palestinian flags and donning traditional keffiyehs, merging sport with a powerful act of peaceful resistance.
