Palestinians Expose Torture and Sexual Violence in Israeli Detention

Palestinian detainees reveal harrowing tales of torture and sexual violence in Israeli prisons, with reports of systematic abuse by guards.

Allegations of Torture and Abuse in Israeli Prisons

In a shocking revelation, Palestinian detainees have exposed severe mistreatment, including acts of torture and sexual violence, during their incarceration in Israeli prisons. Survivors, including Mohammed al-Bakri and a 17-year-old identified only as Ahmed, shared their harrowing experiences, shedding light on a dark reality faced by thousands in detention.

Testimonies of Torture

Speaking to Al Jazeera, former detainees detailed their traumatic experiences, noting that many endure psychological battles long after their release. Mohammed al-Bakri, who was arrested during Israeli military operations in Gaza in March 2024, recounted the brutality he faced. Serving approximately 20 months in various detention centers, al-Bakri described being blindfolded and handcuffed for months, isolated from the outside world.

He recalled a night of horror where Israeli soldiers stripped him naked and unleashed dogs to attack him. “They first handcuffed our hands in front of us. When the rape began, they forced our hands behind our backs, stripped us naked, and threw us onto the floor,” he stated, adding that soldiers also used sexual objects during the assaults.

Tragically, al-Bakri learned upon his release that his wife had been killed in an Israeli attack while he was imprisoned.

Rising Numbers of Detainees

Recent data reveals that more than 9,600 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli prisons, a significant increase from about 5,250 prior to the outbreak of conflict. This rising figure includes approximately 350 children and 3,530 administrative detainees held without formal charges. Advocacy groups attribute this alarming escalation to the recent tensions and violence in the region.

Systematic Patterns of Abuse

In another disturbing report, 17-year-old Ahmed described his traumatic ordeal after being arrested while attempting to bring food to his family in Rafah. Instead of relief, he faced unimaginable abuse.

“Israeli female soldiers suddenly arrived and handcuffed us. They stripped us completely and restrained our legs with metal,” Ahmed recounted. He described being confined in a cramped space where he was subjected to degrading sexual abuse by multiple female soldiers who filmed the assaults. “They forced us to repeat degrading sexual words,” he added.

According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, these testimonies from Ahmed and al-Bakri exemplify a broader pattern of systematic sexual violence in Israeli detention facilities. The organization’s April report, titled "Another Genocide Behind Walls," documented numerous accounts of sexual violence and torture endured by male and female detainees.

Maha Hussaini from Euro-Med emphasized that these cases represent only a fraction of the widespread problem, stating, “We have documented seven forms of sexual violence, including rape and threats of rape.”

Widespread Concerns

Kifaya Khraim from the Women's Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling highlighted that allegations of sexual violence and torture in Israeli prisons are not isolated incidents. After interviewing 75 women across several detention facilities, all acknowledged experiencing sexual violence or humiliation while in custody. Khraim described the situation as systematic, stating, "It’s not isolated incidents. It’s not a lone wolf committing that," indicating a troubling pattern of abuse by both male and female guards against Palestinian detainees.

These alarming revelations call for urgent action from human rights organizations and the international community to address the growing concerns over the treatment of Palestinians in Israeli detention centers.
