Mbappé Shatters Pelé and Messi’s Records in France's World Cup Debut Victory
Kylian Mbappé scores twice in his World Cup debut, surpassing records held by Pelé and Messi, leading France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal.
Historic Debut for Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé made a stunning entrance to the World Cup, scoring a pair of crucial goals that propelled France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening match. This double not only helped secure the win but also etched his name in the football history books by surpassing legends Pelé and Lionel Messi in World Cup scoring.
Breaking Records
With this achievement, Mbappé became the third-highest scorer in World Cup history, tallying a remarkable 14 goals in the tournament, pushing past Pelé’s 12 and Messi's previous record of 13. Furthermore, the 27-year-old is now the all-time top scorer from France in World Cups, overtaking Just Fontaine in the process.
The match unfolded on June 16 in New Jersey, where France initially faced challenges against a persistent Senegal side. Early on, the game was characterized by missed opportunities and missed connections, particularly from Mbappé, who struggled to find his rhythm.
The Match Unfolds
In the first half, Senegal sought to capitalize on France's shaky start, creating the only two clear chances of the period. Nicolas Jackson nearly found the back of the net with a low shot that struck the post and bounced away, while Ismaïla Sarr wasted a prime opportunity just before halftime by firing over the bar despite being set up well by Sadio Mané.
As the teams returned for the second half, France transformed its approach, intensifying pressure on Senegal. Within minutes, they had created multiple goal-scoring opportunities. Eventually, Mbappé found the breakthrough in the 66th minute, receiving a pass from Michael Olise and finishing decisively to open the scoring.
A Dramatic Finish
However, Senegal's resilience was apparent as they swiftly responded. Krépin Diatta set up Jackson, whose shot found the net but was ultimately ruled offside, keeping the score at 1-0.
France soon regained the upper hand, with Adrien Rabiot assisting Bradley Barcola to increase their lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute with a deft lob. Despite having a comfortable advantage, Senegal managed to pull back a goal through Ibrahim Mbaye’s fierce strike, igniting a tense finale. Yet, in injury time, Mbappé extinguished any lingering hopes for Senegal with a powerful long-range shot, sealing the victory at 3-1.
Looking Ahead
This double by Mbappé marks a remarkable milestone and sets him squarely in the sights of further records. Not only does he align with Germany’s Gerd Müller as the third all-time scorer, but he now trails only Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário and Germany’s Miroslav Klose ahead of him. France’s next challenge comes on June 22, where they will face Iraq in what could further cement Mbappé's legacy in World Cup history.
