Google Introduces Long-Awaited Gmail Address Change Feature
Google now allows users to change their Gmail address after two decades, preserving old data while providing a fresh start.
Google Unveils Gmail Address Change Feature
In a significant update that users have awaited for nearly two decades, Google has rolled out a feature enabling Gmail users to change their email addresses. This long-requested capability allows individuals to update their usernames without losing their existing data, including emails, files, and photos.
A Fresh Start with Your Email
Finally, users can move past usernames that no longer reflect their identities. Whether it’s a nickname from youth or a name that feels outdated, this new feature provides a way to refresh one's digital identity. The old email address will remain active as a permanent backup and will continue to receive emails, ensuring communication is not disrupted during the transition.
How to Change Your Gmail Address
To take advantage of this new functionality, follow these simple steps:
- Sign in to Your Google Account: Visit myaccount.google.com and log in with your current Gmail address.
- Access Personal Information: Navigate to the "Personal info" section, which can be found on the left side of the dashboard.
- Locate the Email Section: Scroll down to find the "Email" section and click on your listed email address.
- Initiate the Change: Click on the blue button labeled "Change Google Account email."
- Choose Your New Username: Enter a new Gmail username. It’s critical to choose a unique name, as this can only be changed once a year.
- Verify Your Identity: Google prioritizes security, so you will need to verify your identity by entering a code sent to your recovery email or phone number.
After successfully updating your email address, your previous Gmail account will still function as an alias, allowing you to continue receiving messages sent to the old email.
Gradual Rollout
It’s important to note that this feature is being gradually implemented. Some users may not see the option immediately. If you don’t find the "Change Google Account email" button in your settings, check back in a few days as Google activates this feature for more accounts.
With this update, Google demonstrates its responsiveness to user feedback, finally providing a solution to one of Gmail's longstanding limitations.
This evolution undoubtedly enhances the Gmail experience, giving users greater flexibility in managing their electronic identities.
