Anthropic Surpasses OpenAI with Massive $65 Billion Funding Round

Anthropic has secured a $65 billion funding round, boosting its valuation to $965 billion and topping OpenAI in the AI race.

Anthropic Becomes Most Valuable AI Startup

In a significant development in the artificial intelligence landscape, Anthropic has announced a remarkable $65 billion Series H funding round, elevating its total valuation to approximately $965 billion and surpassing its main competitor, OpenAI. This latest financing effort nearly triples Anthropic's valuation from February 2026, when it stood at $380 billion.

Major Investors and Funding Details

The recent funding round attracted major investments from prominent firms, including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital. Along with the $65 billion raised in this round, the financing also encompasses $15 billion of previously committed capital, which features a notable $5 billion investment from Amazon.

As reported by CNBC, Anthropic’s rise in valuation is indicative of the accelerating interest and demand for AI technologies, especially amidst the growing prominence of its AI coding assistant, Claude Code.

Fast-Growing Revenue and Product Innovations

The company disclosed an impressive revenue run rate of $47 billion, a significant increase from the $30 billion run rate reported earlier this year and up from just $10 billion in annual revenue last fiscal year. The recent product release, Claude Opus 4.8, launched alongside a preview of another model, Claude Mythos, which is designed with advanced cybersecurity capabilities for select clients.

Anthropic's Chief Financial Officer, Krishna Rao, emphasized the growing necessity for its products in the market. He remarked, "Claude is increasingly indispensable to our growing global community of customers. This funding will help us serve the historic demand we are experiencing, stay at the research frontier, and bring Claude to more of the places where work happens."

IPO Aspirations and Competitive Landscape

As both Anthropic and OpenAI gear up for initial public offerings (IPOs), the competitive dynamics within the AI sector are heating up. OpenAI had a valuation of $852 billion following its record-breaking funding round of $122 billion in March. Reports suggest that the Sam Altman-led company is preparing to file its confidential IPO prospectus soon, with aspirations to go public as early as September 2026.

Meanwhile, following its merger with Elon Musk's SpaceX, SpaceXAI also recently filed for an IPO, suggesting that the race to become the first AI giant to go public is intensifying.

Anthropic's swift ascent to the top position in the AI startup space reflects a broader trend of investment and innovation in artificial intelligence technologies, with both firms excited about their futures in the public arena.
