OpenAI Launches New Customizable AI Models
ChatGPT maker OpenAI has launched two new “open” artificial intelligence (AI) models that can be customised and run locally on a laptop, the company announced on Tuesday.
Introducing the New Models
Dubbed “gpt-oss-120b” and “gpt-oss-20b,” these models are classified as “open-weight language models.” This means users can access the AI’s parameters and customise them, marking a significant departure from the company’s ChatGPT bot, which is based on a “closed” model.
Applications and Usage
Such models are often utilized by companies that require AI tailored to their specific needs on their own servers.
Technical Specifications
OpenAI did not disclose the data used to train the new models. However, GPT-oss-120b can run on a graphics card, while the more compact GPT-oss-20b version is capable of running on a laptop with 16 gigabytes of RAM. This allows OpenAI to offer its language models for a wider range of devices.
Capabilities of the New Models
Like other text-generating AI tools, GPT-oss-120b and GPT-oss-20b can write code and conduct online research when prompted.
