Ukrainian Knifeman Kills One, Wounds Four at Polish Abbey

In a shocking incident at a Catholic abbey in Jaroslaw, Poland, a 31-year-old Ukrainian man launched a stabbing spree on Thursday morning, causing one death and injuring four others. The suspect, who had just entered Poland from Germany earlier that day, reportedly armed himself with a kitchen knife from the Benedictine abbey and targeted both clergy and worshippers.

The attack unfolded within the historical walls of the abbey, located about 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The toll of the assault includes three clergy members and a layperson, with a priest being confirmed killed in the violence. Initially, two of the injured victims are in critical condition, according to prosecutor Bozena Harasz-Wołoszyn.

Response from Authorities

Following the incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his outrage, stating that the perpetrator would face the full severity of the law. He condemned the act as heinous and a challenge to societal safety and harmony.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also responded, denouncing the act as a 'horrific crime', asserting that those responsible for such actions must be held accountable. “The perpetrator of this evil must bear full responsibility in accordance with the law,” he stated, emphasizing the need for justice in the face of such violence.

The local mayor, Marcin Nazarewicz, declared a period of mourning in Jaroslaw, urging the community to unite in solidarity during this difficult time.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the motives behind the attack as the assailant was reportedly heading toward a border crossing back into Ukraine before diverting to the abbey. Prosecutors have indicated that they will assess the possibility of alcohol or other influences affecting the attacker at the time of the crime.

While stabbings at religious sites are extremely rare in Poland, this tragic event has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and the necessity for effective responses to violent incidents.
