Rory McIlroy Critiques Bryson DeChambeau's Penalty at 2026 Open

Rory McIlroy argues that Bryson DeChambeau's two-stroke penalty at the 2026 Open was warranted, labeling DeChambeau's actions as performative.

McIlroy Weighs In on DeChambeau’s Controversial Penalty

Rory McIlroy did not hold back in expressing his views regarding the two-stroke penalty handed to Bryson DeChambeau during the second round of the 2026 Open Championship. Observing the incident unfold live, McIlroy insisted the ruling was fair, regardless of DeChambeau's intent.

Justification of the Ruling

The Northern Irish professional shared his thoughts after completing his third round, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. "I was watching it live. I was up in the players lounge with a few other players, and as soon as he made the step into the ball, we all sort of looked at each other, and we were like, 'that didn't seem right,'" McIlroy recounted.
He further stated, "When I heard that he was called in by the rules officials, it was pretty obvious why… I think there’s no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing. Whether it was careless or intentional, I don’t think it matters. I believe the two-shot penalty was justified, for sure."

DeChambeau’s Reaction

In contrast, DeChambeau displayed visible frustration after receiving the penalty, as he addressed R&A rules officials post-play. Having initially started the round strong at 7 under, the penalty dropped his score to 5 under, sidelining him from the lead group. The two-time U.S. Open Champion even hinted through his agent about potentially withdrawing from the tournament but eventually confirmed via social media that he would continue.

McIlroy’s Critique on Performative Actions

Despite the tensions, McIlroy did not shy away from criticizing DeChambeau's conduct, regarding it as theatrical and aimed at attracting attention. "I'm not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it's performative. To hold the tournament hostage like that, while every player and volunteer was left waiting, I didn’t think it was a great look," he asserted.

The Nature of Golf as a Self-Policing Sport

The incident sparked discussions among players regarding fair play and adherence to rules. McIlroy acknowledged that such situations could have been more frequent in the past but underlined that the visibility of every shot on camera makes such events less ambiguous. "It’s obviously impossible to police everyone. Golf is generally a self-policing game, but when there’s obvious evidence like there was last night, it’s a different story," he concluded.

As the tournament continues, McIlroy's statements highlight the ongoing dialogue about sportsmanship and integrity in professional golf, as players and officials navigate the complexities that arise on the course.
