‘It’s Not a Joke’: A ‘Simpsons’ Writer Holds His First Presidential Campaign Rally
Dan Greaney, a Simpsons writer, holds his first presidential rally in LA, emphasizing serious reform despite his comedic background.
A New Hope for Politics: Dan Greaney's Presidential Rally
Dan Greaney, known for his work as a writer on The Simpsons, held his inaugural presidential campaign rally on a sunny Friday afternoon at a park overlooking the Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles. Despite the lighthearted nature of his background, attracting around 30 attendees, Greaney asserted the seriousness of his mission as a progressive Republican running for the 2028 United States presidential election.
A Comedy Roots in Serious Political Ambition
As Greaney took the stage, flanked by American flags, he opened with, “My fellow Americans,” before acknowledging, “Yeah, let’s go with that. It’s a classic.” This self-aware tone exemplified his experience as a TV writer, notably during the golden years of The Simpsons in the 1990s where he contributed to memorable episodes such as "Summer of 4 Ft. 2" and "Bart to the Future."
In the iconic "Bart to the Future" episode, Greaney presented Lisa Simpson as president grappling with the aftermath of a financially troubled predecessor, a storyline some claim prophetically mirrored Donald Trump's actual presidency.
From Prophet to Candidate
In recent months, Greaney has embraced his role as a so-called “Prophet,” posting videos online where he humorously predicts the downfall of Trump and his allies. However, at his rally, he traded in the comedic persona for a more conventional, earnest look dressed in a suit and tie.
"It's pretty ridiculous for me to be running for president," Greaney said, humorously comparing himself to a fictional character, Peter Griffin from Family Guy. Yet, he emphasized that he felt compelled to voice his concerns about the current state of democracy, declaring:
"I think democracy is under attack, and in many ways has been demolished by a rogue Supreme Court, by a lawless president, and by the cliques of billionaires that they work for."
Key Policy Proposals:
Greaney’s campaign focuses on several pivotal reforms, including:
- Expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices
- Establishing universal health care
- Implementing a Green New Deal
- Increasing access to affordable housing
- Repealing Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission to limit corporate political spending
He pledged to refuse corporate PAC money, underscoring his promise to maintain integrity in his campaign efforts.
Support from Friends and Allies
The rally featured an introduction from Mieke Marple, Greaney's campaign director and a longtime friend, who encouraged attendees to engage with and support the campaign. Greaney expressed optimism about the future of his campaign, stating he was still navigating the complexities of political engagement.
"I love a big swing," Greaney expressed, explaining his ambition to connect with a wide range of voters, particularly those disillusioned by the current political landscape.
Moving Forward
As he closes the chapter on the rally, Greaney prepares for the road ahead, planning to launch a podcast to gain insights and advice from seasoned political figures. Self-described as an unconventional candidate, Greaney's intentions remain clear: he aspires to resonate deeply with the average American while striving for a government that represents all citizens.
Drawing a parallel to his past work on The Simpsons, Greaney invokes the idea that a noble vision can lift the spirits of even the smallest voices in the nation, an ethos he hopes fosters change through his campaign efforts.
