Google Wallet ID Passes Set to Launch in Select EU Countries This Summer
Google Wallet is introducing digital IDs and age verification in select EU states this summer, enhancing user security and convenience.
Google Wallet Expands to Support Digital IDs
Google has announced that its Wallet app will start supporting digital IDs from select European Union states this summer. This move is part of a broader initiative to enhance user convenience and security in the digital landscape.
New Age Verification System
In an exciting development, Google is partnering with Sparkasse Bank to introduce a new age verification process. This feature allows users to confirm their age securely, all while protecting their personal details such as their name, address, or birth date. Although specific EU countries eligible for this feature have not been disclosed, the functionality is expected to mirror the current ability to add passports to the app in the UK and US.
Users will generally need to record a video selfie and scan their government ID, allowing Google Wallet to cross-reference these details before integration. This approach ensures a smooth transition to using digital IDs, providing users with more control over their sensitive information.
Compliance with Global Regulations
Google is responding to the growing demand for age verification solutions since the implementation of the UK's Online Safety Act in early 2025. The company has previously introduced Zero Proof Knowledge technology into Google Wallet to enable secure age verification using IDs. The collaboration with Sparkasse Bank exemplifies the innovative capabilities this technology offers.
Enhanced Checkout Experience
In addition to ID and age verification features, Google aims to streamline the checkout process for users. If online merchants in the EU support direct Google Pay checkout, users will be able to enjoy a seamless experience—similar to that of Apple Pay—by selecting their preferred payment options stored in Google Wallet.
Furthermore, Google has enhanced its Secure Payment Authentication feature, allowing EU customers to transact using Google Pay on European websites with just biometric verification. This update removes the need for one-time passcodes or additional identity verification processes, making online shopping even more convenient.
As the summer launch approaches, users in the EU can look forward to these advancements in Google Wallet, paving the way for a more secure and efficient digital identity management experience.
