Clifton George Sentenced for Murdering Partner and Causing Gas Explosion
Clifton George has received a life sentence for murdering his partner Annabel Rook and causing a gas explosion to destroy evidence.
Man Sentenced for Murder and Explosive Aftermath
Clifton George, 45, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 23 years after being convicted of the brutal murder of his partner, Annabel Rook. Rook, a mother of two, was stabbed 31 times amidst a heated argument in their home located on Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, north London, on June 17, 2025. Following the fatal attack, George attempted to obliterate evidence of his crime by igniting a gas explosion in their shared residence.
The Violent Incident
The court heard that George emotionally and physically abused Rook over the course of their ten-year relationship. On the night of the murder, after Rook expressed her intention to end the relationship, a violent confrontation ensued. Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC revealed that George punched Rook, attempted to strangle her, and ultimately stabbed her to death.
In his effort to destroy all traces of the crime, George initiated a fire in the basement which subsequently caused a gas canister to explode, resulting in approximately £400,000 in damages. When neighbors investigated the subsequent explosion, they found George covered in blood lying on the kitchen floor.
The Trial and Sentencing
Although George initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson, he denied the charge of murder, claiming he had lost control. After a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, the jury unanimously convicted him of murder.
Mr. Justice Constable KC pointed out George's dual nature, stating he could be personable yet had a dangerously volatile temper characterized by rage over trivial matters. Rook's family expressed profound grief over her loss, describing her as optimistic and loving. Her father, Peter Rook, condemned George as "utterly selfish," while her mother, Susanna Rook, labeled him a "wicked, totally narcissistic, damaged person."
The Impact on Rook's Family
Emotional testimonies during the trial painted a picture of Rook's harrowing experience in her relationship with George. Rook's sister noted the absence of joy and hope following her murder, while friends recounted Rook's gradual realization of the abuse. In a voice note played in court, she had voiced her fears about George's wrath just weeks before her death.
With the shocked family now left to navigate the grief of losing Annabel, Sisley remarked that they would never fully come to terms with her premature death.
