California Man Charged with Smuggling Over $300 Million in Nvidia Chips to China
Yiu Kong Lui is charged with smuggling Nvidia chips worth $300 million to China, risking US national security and facing 50 years in prison.
Allegations Against Yiu Kong Lui
A California man, Yiu Kong Lui, has been arrested and is facing significant federal charges for his alleged role in smuggling over $300 million worth of Nvidia semiconductor chips to China. This operation, which involved deceitful tactics to circumvent U.S. export laws, has raised serious national security concerns among officials.
Details of the Case
The U.S. authorities have accused the 38-year-old resident of San Gabriel of conspiring with foreign shipping companies to mislead American manufacturers about the true end destination of the chips. Lui was arrested in October 2026 and now faces charges that include violating export controls, engaging in smuggling activities, and money laundering.
According to the indictment, Liu orchestrated a scheme that commenced in 2023 and continued until August 2026. His company, purported to be a legitimate broker, allegedly received over $180 million for facilitating these transactions. By collaborating with several co-conspirators who operated shell companies in Southeast Asia, he was able to route the chips through Malaysia or Singapore before they reached China.
Implications for National Security
It is illegal to export advanced semiconductor technology to China without a valid license. Nvidia's chips are particularly coveted in artificial intelligence applications due to their capability to conduct multiple calculations simultaneously, making them critical in the competition between the U.S. and China in AI technology.
Roman Rozhavsky, an assistant director in the FBI's counterintelligence division, highlighted the critical nature of these export controls for national security. He stated, "Controlling the export of advanced SI technology is critical to safeguarding our national security and defending the homeland."
Potential Consequences and Next Steps
If convicted on all charges, Yiu Kong Lui faces the possibility of up to 50 years in prison. As of now, it remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation, and he has yet to enter a plea regarding the charges brought against him.
In this unfolding case, Nvidia has not issued any comment regarding the allegations of smuggling involving its products. As this investigation develops, further insights into the implications of such actions on U.S.-China relations and the tech industry are expected to emerge.
