  • Natural sweeteners: mogroside V, stevioside, sucrose.

Dr. Kiran Raosaheb Patil and his team discovered that approximately 75% of the sweeteners tested influenced at least one type of gut bacteria, marking a significant observation in understanding how these compounds can alter microbial health.

"While the implications of these findings are yet to be fully understood in humans, they prompt a need for further cohort studies to evaluate the direct effects on gut microbiota," stated Dr. Patil.

Noteworthy Interactions with Medications

In a particular focus of the study, researchers examined potential interactions between sweeteners and commonly used drugs, discovering over 100 unique interactions. An especially concerning combination noted was the interaction of isosteviol, a sweetener derived from stevia, with duloxetine, an antidepressant. This combination adversely affected two types of gut bacteria essential for a healthy digestive system.

Dr. Patil elaborated that while isosteviol is not a sweetener itself, it was important to study its mechanisms due to its relevance in assessing sweetener interactions. He emphasized that understanding these interactions is vital for informing future clinical studies on sweetener safety concerning medication use.

The Call for Human Trials

Dr. Ashkan Farhadi, a board-certified gastroenterologist who reviewed the study, remarked on its significance in assessing the comprehensive impacts of sweeteners on gut health. While this initial research provided foundational insights into the effects on microbiome dynamics, he highlighted the necessity of conducting similar studies in animal models or human participants to confirm these laboratory findings.
