Anthony Smith Charged with Domestic Assault
Former UFC fighter Anthony Smith is now facing serious legal troubles as he confronts three felony charges stemming from an alarming incident involving his wife. The charges, which include attempted first-degree domestic assault, come after a confrontation that allegedly began at a bar in Gretna, Nebraska.
Details of the Incident
According to the Sarpy County Attorney's Office, the altercation unfolded late at night when Smith reportedly threatened to kill his wife if she did not accompany him home. Witnesses state that Smith forcibly pushed her into a vehicle, from which she managed to escape.
The situation escalated further when Smith allegedly attempted to run her over with the car, making several failed attempts to strike her as she fled. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Smith voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities on Monday night.
Court Proceedings and Bail
A judge subsequently set Smith's bail at an imposing $500,000. As part of the conditions of his release, he has been ordered to stay away from his wife. Smith's next court appearance is scheduled for August 17, where more details about the case may unfold.
Smith's MMA Career Overview
Before these legal issues arose, Smith was known for his vibrant career in mixed martial arts, headlining eight UFC events and famously challenging Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. His journey in MMA was particularly notable given a rocky start; Smith initially held a professional record of 6-7 before turning his career around. At his peak, he achieved victories over several notable fighters, including former champions such as Rashad Evans and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
After taking a brief hiatus, he made a comeback in April, securing a victory in his bare-knuckle MMA debut against Chase Sherman. Over his lengthy career, Smith has competed professionally in 61 bouts, enduring 13 knockout losses. In addition to fighting, he has also carved out a role for himself as an MMA analyst, showcasing his insights into the sport.
As the court case progresses, Smith's future in both his personal life and professional career hangs in the balance. The grave nature of the charges against him raises significant concerns about his conduct and its potential repercussions within the sporting world.
